DMG’s DMC U Machining Centers are All About Five-Axis Flexibility

Smiths Machine was recently featured in this story in DMG / MORI SEIKI America’s quarterly publication. Smiths is honored that this world class equipment supplier values our opinions and used our story to promote their first rate brand.

With 22 DMG machines on the floor, Tim Smith, CFO of SMITHS MACHINE LLC, believes in his DMG products, especially his four DMG DMC U duoBLOCK® Series five-axis universal machining centers. “We wanted a very flexible five-axis machine and the duoBLOCK® is the best out there,” says Smith.

The company started in the 1970’s as SMITHS Welding & Machine Shop and was run part time by Smith’s father, Woody Smith. “We went to full time in 1990 and have now grown to 100 employees in 50,000 sq. ft. of space across two facilities,” Smith notes. Over time, the company upgraded to more advanced DMG multi-axis equipment, including two DMC 100 U duoBLOCK® and two DMC 80 U duoBLOCK® universal machining centers. “I wanted to reduce setups and increase efficiency to avoid work in process (WIP). Today, 98% of our parts are done in one setting and we have minimal WIP,” says Smith. Quality has also improved. “Our volumetric accuracy is far superior when we have fewer setups,” he adds.

SMITHS MACHINE has found a partner in DMG to grow their business. “DMG’s factory support is first rate and their product lines complement our business. The multi-axis machines give us the flexibility and speed needed for the tailored jobs that we now take on,” says Smith.
